One Mistake… and Suddenly You’re Telling Yourself You’re Terrible?

What you say to yourself during sport matters more than most athletes realise.

One mistake becomes:

“I’m playing terribly.”

“I always mess this up.”

“I’m not good enough.”

“Everyone else is better than me.”

And just like that, your attention has left the game.

Negative self-talk can affect confidence, increase performance anxiety, fuel fear of failure and make athletes overthink decisions that would normally feel automatic.

The goal isn’t fake positivity.

It’s learning to use productive self-talk.

Instead of:

“I can’t do this.”

Try:

“Reset. Next job.”

Instead of:

“I always choke under pressure.”

Try:

“I’ve handled pressure before. Stay with the process.”

Strong athletes learn to:

• Notice unhelpful thoughts without automatically believing them

• Reset quickly after mistakes

• Speak to themselves in a way that supports performance

• Focus on controllable actions

• Build confidence from preparation and evidence

• Separate one poor moment from their identity as an athlete

At HB Athlete Mindset, I help athletes develop confidence, manage negative self-talk, overthinking, perfectionism, performance anxiety and fear of failure, while building the mental skills needed to perform under pressure.

Because your inner voice should be part of your performance team — not your loudest heckler.
