Great in Training… But Go Missing When the Pressure’s On?

You can train brilliantly all week, feel confident in warm-up… then competition starts and suddenly everything feels harder.
Your body tightens. You overthink. Decisions slow down. You start worrying about making mistakes.
That doesn’t mean you’re “bad under pressure”.
It usually means you haven’t trained pressure enough.
Performing under pressure is a skill — and like any skill, it can improve with practice.
Athletes get better at handling big moments when they:
• Regularly challenge themselves against strong competition
• Create pressure situations in training
• Practise making decisions when tired or uncomfortable
• Use visualisation to rehearse high-pressure moments
• Learn how to regulate nerves rather than fight them
• Focus on the next job instead of the consequences
Think about learning to drive.
No one feels relaxed the first time they hit a busy road. You build confidence by gradually putting yourself in harder situations.
Sport is much the same.
The more often your brain experiences pressure and learns, “Yep, I can handle this”, the less overwhelming those moments become.
At HB Athlete Mindset, I help athletes manage performance anxiety, nerves, fear of failure, overthinking and confidence under pressure.
Because pressure doesn’t have to be something you avoid.
You can train for it.
