All athletes at various times in their lives competing will have at least some time as a substitute player or have time on the bench. This can often be disheartening, frustrating and difficult to deal with. In order to move through this period, a strong positive attitude towards behaviour changes will be needed.
Ask yourself questions like:
“How can I increase the quality of my skill/ attributes to help out my team?”
“What can I do differently?”
“Who do I need to talk to gain a perspective on certain aspects I should work on?” Think coaches, mentors, trusted teammates / friends.
“Am I watching any / enough game footage and doing some game analysis?”
“Can I keep calm, patient but relentless in my pursuit to change the circumstances?”
Self reflection, awareness and a piece of humble pie can steer you in the right direction for increased motivation to be ready mentally and physically for when you are called up to perform for your team.
